Yesterday we had two machines in the shop getting fresh installations of Windows 7. On first check for Windows updates with SP1 installed, both hung on checking for updates. We let one machine check for 10 hours without success.
The solution:
- Stop the Windows Update Service (wuauserv).
- Download and install KB3050265
- Download and install KB3102810
Reboot and check for updates again. Both of our machines found their required updates in less than 5 minutes.

Problem returns. Seems Microsoft is tweaking Microsoft update and breaking it for Windows 7. After doing the above updates, run these two and you should be good to go:
